BC Schizophrenia Society - Celebrating 25 years of helping people
On Monday October 29, 2007, over 50 donors, board members, staff and volunteers gathered at the Granville Island Hotel
for a reception in celebration of the BC Schizophrenia Society 25th anniversary.
Mr. Fred Dawe, former president of BCSS, presented a special award to Renea Mohammed.
Renea is a truly outstanding woman and an example of what recovery can look like with the appropriate medication, family support, and education programs like BRIDGES. Renea is an active volunteer with BCSS and assists us with community outreach through partnership presentations and telling her story during our monthly fundraising breakfast meetings.
A second award of thanks was presented to Mr. Diamond Karim, owner of the Granville Island Hotel, who graciously donated the lounge for the event.
Volunteer Profile: Thomas Wan
Hi. My name is Thomas Wan. I was born in Hong Kong, moved to Vancouver 10 years ago. I am a volunteer for the outreach program of BCSS. Recently, we have participated in the SUCCESS Chinese Health Fair, where we have made a successful attempt to get information and support for Schizophrenia out to the Asian communities.
Currently, I am a 4th year Human Kinetics student in the University of British Columbia majoring in Kinesiology and Health Science. My future goal is to attend the School of Medicine in UBC and make positive impact on the communityas a physician.
When my life is not bombarded with reading, doing assignments, studying exams and volunteering, I enjoy working out and playing basketball with my friends. Learn more about volunteering with BCSS
Moving Lives Foward Scholarship:
The Moving Lives Forward scholarship offers financial assistance for a wide range of educational opportunties such as:
- High School Equivalency Programs
Community College, Trade or Vocational School Programs
Bachelor or Graduate degrees
To be eligible for the scholarship applicants must:
- Be a resident of British Columbia
- Be diagnosed with a severe and persistent mental illness
- (e.g., schizophrenia, schizo-affective disorder or bipolar disorder).
- Be receiving medical treatment for the disorder, including medication and psychiatric care
- Complete an application package
The names of the 8 scholarship winners for 2007 are:
Clara Morgan-Wilson ($1500), Alison Hirst ($1500), Karla Moorman ($750), Wilma Bates ($750), Bob Kling ($750),
Arthur Rogosinski ($750), Cheryl Stein ($750) and Amanda Pires ($750).
Naked Bungy 2008
Following the sucessful fundraiser in 2007, on the weekend of Feb 23-24th, 2008, Wild Play Parks of Nanaimo will be holding another fundraising event to benefit the BC Schizophrenia Society.
