BCSS Board of Directors

BCSS has a Board of Directors whose role is to act honestly and in good faith in the best interests of the society. Board members create broad policy to governing the mandates of the Society and raise funds on behalf of BCSS.

Board Members

Dave Halikowski – President

Dave Halikowski

David Halikowski lives in Prince George. First elected to the BCSS Board in 2002, he has served the Society in various capacities, including several years as a Director on the Board of the Schizophrenia Society of Canada.

In addition, Dave has been involved with and on the Executive of his local Branch for over 12 years. He is currently President of the BCSS Prince George Branch.

As a family member, Dave has worked passionately to help remove the stigma associated with mental illness. He is also a tireless advocate for education, particularly regarding the need for appropriate care and adequate resources for children developing mental illness.

Kees Bastiaans

Kees Bastiaans – Duncan

Kees Bastiaans is a retired small businessman. After moving from Winnipeg in 2007, Cowichan Bay is now home. He became actively involved with volunteering at MSS in 2004. At present he also volunteers in the community and facilitates Strengthening Families Together with his wife Diane.

 

 

Fred Dawe – Powell River

Fred Dawe

Fred Dawe retired from corporate sector in 1990 and has been very active in serving the interests of people with schizophrenia and their families. He is past President of the BC Schizophrenia Society, and past president of the Schizophrenia Society of Canada.

He has served on hiring committees for former and current UBC Chair in Schizophrenia Research, and assisted in development of MIND Foundation of BC.

He is a member of the BC Alliance for Mental Health/Illness and Addictions and a member of BC Community Action Initiative, responsible for allocation of $10 million for BC’s new 10-year Mental Health Plan.

 

Jamie Graham

Jamie Graham – Victoria

Jamie H. Graham, O.O.M., SBStJ was appointed Chief Constable of the Victoria Police Department, in December 2008. Prior to that he was the Chief of the Vancouver Police Department. Before that he served just under 35 years with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, holding a number of command, investigative and executive positions in British Columbia and Alberta. He has lectured extensively on leadership, security issues, relationship building, crisis management, mental health and workplace wellness.

Chief Graham is an active member of local, Provincial, National and International Associations of Police Chiefs. He is Vice President of the B.C. Association of Municipal Police Chiefs. He is a Director on the Board of the B.C. Schizophrenia Society.

Chief Graham is a reliable and committed professional with a proven record of success. He is well known for his reputation as a no-nonsense leader and problem solver. He has been married to lawyer Gail Graham (not the golfer) for 26 years.

John E Gray, PhD

John Gray, PhD. – Victoria

Dr John Gray is one of Canada’s leading authorities on mental health policy. He has worked on Mental Health Act issues for over 20 years. He is the lead authors on the recently published book Canadian Mental Health Law and Policy and was a contributor to the recent Globe and Mail series “Breakdown, Canada’s Mental Health Crisis“.

 

Sue Ellen Saunders, B.N. – Gabriola Island

Sue Saunders graduated from Royal Victoria School of Nursing in Montreal in 1964 and from McGill University School for Nurses in 1968. She also studied business at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia. She has spent her entire career working on behalf of people with serious and persistent mental illness.

Ms. Saunders retired as Director of Burnaby Psychiatric Services in 1997. She has also served for many years on the board of the MIND Foundation of BC.  Her chief interest is working to ensure that people with serious mental illness and their families receive effective long-term health care and support.

Binh Ly

Binh Ly is currently employed by a large multinational Healthcare Firm as an Account Executive. He has extensive business and sales experience working with organizations in the HealthCare and Technology Vertical. He obtained his Business Degree from Simon Fraser University in 1998 with a focus on Marketing and International Business. He currently resides in Vancouver with his family. He had a family member who suffered from mental illness for more than 10 years so he is familiar with the many challenges clients with Mental Illness face on a daily basis. He is currently on our Business Initiative Council and plans to contribute in other areas where his talents are required.

Alan Bordeville, BHSc, RMT

Alan Bordeville

Alan currently lives and works in downtown Vancouver as a Registered Massage Therapist. He holds a Health Science degree and a Counselling Skills certificate.
Having a family member dealing with schizophrenia, Alan wants to help make a difference through the BCSS board of directors. Alan hopes to increase awareness of the BCSS through various business trade associations, such as the Vancouver Board of Trade, and provide ongoing support to the BCSS and other families dealing with schizophrenia.
