PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE from DAVE HALIKOWSKI
The BC Schizophrenia Society (BCSS) brings creative solutions and hope to thousands of families coping with serious mental illness in British Columbia.
Guided by the belief that obstacles can be overcome and needless distress can be alleviated, BCSS brings together citizens, corporations, government and community agencies to help us fulfil our Mission (see opposite). The powerful BCSS programs described on page 6 provide support and education to and families and consumers province-wide, and are the heart of our organization.
The past year has been one of significant economic challenges. Yet it has also been a year of remarkable progress for us in improving support and communications. As you will see on page 5, our service delivery statistics are amazing. In addition, our website at www.bcss.org has become a vital and important resource for many families and friends of people with mental illness (page 8). People struggling to understand a loved one’s symptoms or trying to find better services clearly appreciate a safe and supportive place on the internet where they can communicate freely amongst themselves, and hear from other families who truly understand what they are going through.
Last but not least, special thanks to each and every individual whose hard work and generous support help us continue to bring understanding, compassion and hope to people with mental illness and their families.
