This video series was produced by the Schizophrenia Society of Ontario, based on the Schizophrenia Society of Canada’s Strengthening Families Together program. While some information is Ontario specific, most is very applicable and useful to British Columbians. Episode 1: What is Mental Illness?
Episode one provides a general introduction to mental illness. We look at the problems of stigma as well as some common myths about mental illness. The different aspects of psychosis are examined as well the biopsychosocial factors involved in the development of mental illness.Click here to watch Episode 1
Episode 2: Schizophrenia
Episode two looks at schizophrenia. The symptoms and phases of the illness are explained and various treatment methods are examined.

Episode 3: Mood and Anxiety Disorders
Episode three looks at the various mood disorders—clinical depression, bipolar disorder, and anxiety disorder. Symptoms and phases, as well as various treatment methods, are explained.

Episode 4: Coping as a Family Part One
Episode four looks at some of the needs and challenges faced by family members of people with mental illness. Loss and grief, care for the caregiver, and stress management are examined.

Episode 5: Coping as a Family Part Two
Episode five looks at the importance of a self-care plan for caregivers including the need for adequate support systems. We look at what’s involved in communicating effectively as well as steps to help problem solve. Talking about mental illness with other people is also examined.

Episode 6: Treating Mental Illness
Episode six looks at the connection between mental illness and the brain. Causes and treatments, including medication and psychosocial treatments, are examined. We also take a look at the concept of ‘recovery’.

Episode seven looks at the basic structure of the mental health system in Ontario. We also explore the various people working in the mental health sector.

Episode 8: Mental Illness, Addictions, and Criminal Justice
Episode eight looks at addictions and concurrent disorders including how it affects people with mental illness and their family members. The warning signs of addictions are examined and the involvement of people with mental illness in the criminal justice system is explored. [Please note that British Columbia has very different laws relating to mental illness - please see the Guide to the Mental Health Act for BC-specific information. ]

Episode 9: Living with Mental Illness
Episode nine looks at daily living tips for people with mental illness and their family members. The importance of setting goals and expectations between family members and their relative with mental illness is also discussed. Relapse prevention and crisis planning are examined and facts about suicide are provided.
