Jodi and Harpreet’s Half-Marathon Fundraiser for BCSS
Dear friends,
We (Jodi Diamond and long time running partner, Harpreet Chauhan) will be doing the Victoria Half Marathon on October 10th.
We have decided to run on behalf of the BC Schizophrenia Society. As we both work in mental health, we see daily how devastating mental illness can be for the ones afflicted and for their families. We feel that this organization is a worthwhile cause. Unfortunately, mental illness does not get the same attention and research dollars as other illnesses and yet, it affects many.
Schizophrenia is a serious disorder of the brain and mind but it is treatable. Typically, it affects people between the ages of 15 and 25 years of age. Although there is no cure for Schizophrenia, the treatment success rate with Antipsychotic medications can be high.
It is not clearly understood why people get Schizophrenia. However, the leading theory is that it is as a result of genetic predisposition combined with environmental exposure and/or stresses during pregnancy or childhood that contribute to or trigger the disorder. Already researchers have identified several of the key genes that when damaged increase the risk for developing Schizophrenia.
As it is possible that Schizophrenia may afflict someone you know or already has, I hope that you will consider a donation on behalf of this very worthwhile cause.
