Medical Advisory Board
Dr. Bill MacEwan
Director, Schizophrenia Division, University of British Columbia.

Dr. Bill MacEwan
Dr. MacEwan runs the Fraser South Early Psychosis Intervention (EPI) Program at Peace Arch Hospital in White Rock, one of the largest in Canada, and Ward 9a at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver.
His research interests have been in the study of novel antipsychotics in the treatment of schizophrenia.
Dr. MacEwan also does outreach to and is a dedicated advocate for people with serious mental illness living in poverty on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.
Dr. MacEwan has been involved with the BC Schizophrenia Society since he began his medical career. He has served on the Society’s Board of Directors and as Chair of the Fundraising Committee. Currently he is the Chair of the Medical Advisory Board.
Dr. William Honer

Dr. William Honer
University of British Columbia Jack Bell Chair in Schizophrenia Research; Professor and Head, Department of Psychiatry; Scientific Director, Institute of Mental Health.
Dr. Honer’s primary area of interest is the neurobiology and mechanisms of illness in schizophrenia. In addition to his extensive contributions on the etiology and pathophysiology of schizophrenia, he has studied brain structure and treatment response in first-episode and treatment refractory patients.
Dr. Honer’s research studies include presynaptic proteins in neuropsychiatric disorders and early psychosis collaboration to understand factors that predispose to psychotic illnesses. Other work includes MRI studies, T2 analysis of myelin water fraction, MRS, assessment of fronto-striatal and hippocampal function, clinical trials of antipsychotic drugs and their effects, and investigating an anti-viral drug in schizophrenia.
He is the author of more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and has authored the assessment section of the Canadian Clinical Practice Guidelines for Schizophrenia.
Dr. Honer has received the Young Investigator Award and the Heinz Lehmann Award from the Canadian College of Neuropsychopharmacology and a Scientist Award from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. He is also the recipient of a 2011 Award for Excellence in Mentoring Early Career Faculty from the UBC Faculty of Medicine.
Dr. Anthony Phillips

Dr. Anthony Phillips
Founding Director, UBC Institute of Mental Health, Professor of Psychiatry and Senior Scientist in the University of British Columbia / Vancouver Coastal Health Brain Research Centre.
Dr Phillips is also Scientific Director, Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction (INMHA). The INMHA addresses all aspects of research dealing with Brain-Mind relationships inclusive of the four pillars of the CIHR: biomedical, clinical, health services and population health research.
Dr. Phillips’ research interests are broadly based within the field of preclinical neuropsychopharmacology and systems neuroscience. His pioneering research, with H.C. Fibiger, laid the foundation for the role of dopamine in the neural control of motivation and memory, with its clinical implications for understanding biological correlates of addiction. He has a long-standing interest in applying knowledge concerning normal brain-behavior function to understanding the neural bases of mental illness and addiction.
His 2010 election to Fellowship in the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences is considered one of the highest honours for individuals in the health sciences community.
