Re-Mind: A Day of Art, Music & Readings

For National Schizophrenia and Psychosis Awareness Day on May 24, B.C. Schizophrenia Society hosted Re-Mind: A day of art, music & readings. More than 100 people showed up to celebrate the artistic accomplishments of those living with mental illness. The day long event featured the work of over a dozen artists, live music, book readings, food and drinks! Highlights of day included authors Bryn Ditmars and Erin Hawkes reading passages from their books and a live performance by Oliver O’dea, a musician living with mental illness. Trevor Mills, a hip-hop artist and advocate for schizophrenia awareness, capped off the evening with a powerful performance, drawing in many new faces to join the celebration.

Stigma around mental illness adds to the challenges faced by people living with mental illness and their loved ones. Together we can break down the stigma around mental illness by re-framing our understanding of who is affected by mental illness. This event was a huge success in bringing people together and serving to “re-mind” us what people living with mental illness are able to achieve.

Many thanks to the Otsuka-Lundbeck Alliance for making this incredible day of art and inspiration possible.
