Caring for a family member, friend or loved one with a mental illness can be challenging. Having the support of other people who've been there can help you manage your stress and take good care of yourself, and often help you to be more effective in caring for your loved one. For a list of ongoing family support groups, see the list above. If they aren't a fit or you don't have one in your area, there are private online facilitated support groups available at www.support.bcss.org These groups are for a person supporting someone with any kind of mental illness.
Psychosis, a brain condition that causes a temporary or chronic break with reality, affects more young people than type I diabetes. Early medical treatment for this brain condition makes a huge difference to how quickly and completely people recover. Since the condition most commonly first appears in late teens and early 20s, having information on how to spot and stop psychosis early in one's friends or oneself can make a big difference in someone's life. The ReachOut Psychosis tour is a fun and interactive music and slam poetry presentation that tours throughout BC to reach young people with this message. The program, a project of the BC Schizophrenia Society with funding from the Provincial Health Authority / BC Partners for Mental Health and Addictions Information, has a video giving a taste of the presentation at www.reachoutpsychosis.com
The Respite Program of the British Columbia Schizophrenia Society provides respite care to primary caregivers of individuals with a serious mental illness. Services are flexible to the needs of the family. Respite services may range from a few hours a day, week, or month, to a more focussed period of days or weeks.
In its broadest sense, respite simply means a break, or reprieve. Respite Care is defined as temporary, short-term care designed to give relief or support to a primary unpaid caregiver who has accepted responsibility for the ongoing care and supervision of another individual.
This service is currently available in Vancouver, Richmond, Langley, Surrey, White Rock, Delta, Burnaby, New Westminster, and the Tri-Cities area. For more information contact the coordinator Brenda Blanchard at bcssrespite@dccnet.com or visit http://www.respite.bcss.org
