The following are some recent news items and service offerings from the BC Partners member agencies and other sources on topics affecting family members and their loved ones with a mental illness.
MDA - Everything You Wanted to Know About Bipolar Disorder with Dr. Chris Gorman
Dr. Chris Gorman, Psychiatrist, St. Paul's Hospital, will provide an informative evening on the often misunderstood mental illness, bipolar disorder, previously known as manic depression. Everyone, from the person living with bipolar, their family and friends and others in the health field, will have a fuller understanding of the disorder after attending this Education Evening.
AnxietyBC - Return to Work Program for Persons with Anxiety Disorders
Persons between the ages of 19 and 60 who are currently on temporary disability leave due to a diagnosed anxiety disorder for at least 1 month and receiving disability benefits, may be eligible for this return to work (RTW) program.
AnxietyBC - OCD Study at UBC
The UBC Department of Psychiatry is currently seeking individuals with a diagnosis or suspected diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) to participate in a study focused on identifying the cognitive underpinnings of OCD. See Cognitive Contributions to OCD
MDA's Psychiatric Walk-in Clinic opens in Vancouver
The Mood Disorders Association of BC, in conjunction with Drs. Ron Remick and Chris Gorman, consulting psychiatrists, operate a weekly psychiatric clinic for MDA members. Clinic hours are Wednesday afternoons from 1:30-5:30 PM. Patients using the clinic will meet from 1:30-2:30PM for a psychoeducational group then, individual, pre-booked appointments will be held until 5:30PM.
Mental Illness Awareness Week
Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW) is an annual national public education campaign designed to help open the eyes of Canadians to the reality of mental illness.
World Suicide Prevention Day
World Suicide Prevention Day is held on September 10th each year as an initiative of the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP), and is co-sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO). The theme in 2009 is "Suicide Prevention in Different Cultures."
World Mental Health Day
The theme for this years' World Mental Health day on October 10 is Mental Health in Primary Care: Enhancing Treatment and Promoting Mental Health
MDA - Kelowna men needed for research study on depression and masculinities
About 25% of Canadians will suffer from depression during their lifetime. Fewer men than women are diagnosed with depression, yet the suicide rate for men is 4 times higher than for women.This study seeks to understand men's depression-related behaviours and beliefs and the connections to how men view themselves and their masculinity
MDA - Kelowna men needed for research study on depression and older men
Researchers at UBC are interested in speaking with English-speaking men aged 65 or older who are diagnosed with, or self-identify as, depressed. Researchers will ask participants about their experiences of depression, the challenges they face, and the support they would like in dealing with depression.
