Victoria - BCSS - Family Matters 2 Service Dialogue

Victoria Branch Family Matters invites you to participate in part two of an island wide family forum on November 8th (please scroll down for more details).

BEGINNING THE DIALOGUE…

On September 15, 2007, 45 family members of VIHA Mental Health and Addiction Services (MHAS) service recipients gathered for an island-wide Family Forum in Nanaimo, BC. A consultant facilitated the forum, which culminated in the Family Matters report that was shared with participants. The forum aims were the following:

  • Understand from the family’s point of view what services are most valued
  • Identify from the family’s point of view what is needed to improve services
  • Provide information on family support services that exist in different communities
  • Explore an ongoing mechanism for feedback from families

Participants chose 7 priority areas for discussion and key themes were identified

  • Impacts of Poverty
  • Families in crisis - finding the time and resources to change the pattern
  • Dual Diagnosis
  • Access to services
  • Caring Attitude of Clinicians
  • How to involve families while maintaining confidentiality for the client
  • Setting boundaries (what to do when your loved one does not want to or is unable to accept treatment)

THE NEXT STEPS… You are invited to Family Matters 2

Coast Bastion Inn, Nanaimo, BC
November 8, 2008 10am-4pm
