Featured Resources:
Anxious Children
For many children and youth the start of the school year brings on feelings of anxiety and unease over separation from their parents. These emotions usually go away once new routines have been established, but for some children and teens the anxious feelings continue. Anxiety B.C. has a number of resources to help parents, including Helpful Tips and Healthy Habits for the Home. Their Complete Home Toolkit is a comprehensive resource of tools to help parents help their children.
Mental Illness Awareness Week Resources
Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW) is an annual national public education campaign coordinated by the Canadian Alliance for Mental Illness and Mental Health (CAMIMH). The goal of MIAW is to raise awareness of mental illness and the importance of mental health promotion; to end stigma associated with mental illnesses; and to ensure mental health issues stay on the national social policy agenda.
This year's MIAW is October 3-9 and the deadline to order campaign materials (brochures, posters, bookmarks) is September 12. They can be ordered here: http://miaw.ca/en/campaign/orders.aspx
Many organizations run specific workshops and events to coincide with MIAW. For information on support and education events for MIAW of specific interest to people supporting a loved one with a mental illness, please visit the BCSS Family Calendar.
Coinciding with Mental Illness Awareness Week, a number of BCSS branches are offering Strengthening Families Together, a 10-session program designed to help families and friends of persons with a mental illness by providing support, awareness, and tools to cope with the impact of mental illness and assist the person with their recovery plans. More information on the program can be found at our Strengthening Families Together program page.
Anosognosia Videos
Anosognosia is a condition in which a person suffering from a disability is unaware of or denies the existence of his or her disability. While this condition generally affects those suffering impairment after brain injury or stroke, it can also affect people with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, causing them to be incapable of recognizing they are ill.
Dr. Xavier Amador is the author of I Am Not Sick I Don't Need Help! and was a speaker at an Anosognosia workshop in July, focusing on how the condition relates to those with a mental illness. A video excerpt of Dr. Amador's comments can be viewed in two parts online (Part 1 and Part 2). To watch the entire workshop online, visit Anosognosia Workshop July 3, 2010 (NAMI Conference) from Treatment Advocacy Center.
