July 2008 - Educators Resources

Welcome to the Educators Resource E-Newsletter for July. This newsletter gives regular updates on mental health information for teachers and services, programs and information available to family members and supporters of persons with a mental illness. If you have any suggestions or feedback on what you’d like this newsletter to contain please contact the coordinator at onlinesupport@bcss.org This month’s profiled resources are below. As usual you can also find educator resources at www.educators.bcss.org , support groups and referral information at www.families.bcss.org and a list of family support groups and events at www.familyevents.bcss.org

School Mental Health Resource Guide Project

Globe and Mail - Comprehensive Series on Mental Health

Support Group Listing Updates - siblings, adult children groups

Provincial Distress line - Mental Health related is 25% of calls

School Mental Health Resource Guide

Several of the partner organizations of BC Partners for Mental Health and Addictions Information are combining forces to compile a comprehensive guide to mental health and addictions related programs offered in BC for elementary and secondary schools. The goal is to help teachers select which programs will be the best fit for their class or school.

The guide will indicate which programs are evidence-based (i.e. their method/information is supported by scientific or medical evidence of effectiveness) and which prescribed learning objectives (PLO’s) they support. The group is forming an advisory group of educators to give feedback on what types of information and presentation teachers and school boards require for the resource. Participation can range from email based vetting to consultation meetings. If you’d like to provide feedback or request further information on this project, please contact Sophia Kelly at onlinesupport@bcss.org

Globe and Mail

Tired of seeing mental illness misrepresented or sensationalized in the mainstream media? The Globe and Mail recently did a positive, comprehensive and well-researched series on mental illness that is a breath of fresh air. The series appears to be well researched and incorporates in-depth, positive coverage on the topic, and might prove useful as a way to open up the topic of mental illness stigma and discrimination in the classroom.

The Globe is also collecting comments from the public to submit to members of parliament: “Has mental illness affected your life or that of a loved one? Share your experiences with globeandmail.com readers and let us know what single change in society or policy would help the most. The Globe will send all of these messages to every member of Parliament in Canada, in hopes they will help to break down the stigma of mental illness.” Submit a story Submit photos and videos Visit the title page for the series
