Jehannine Austin – Genetics and Mental Illness

Jehannine Austin, PhD, Genetic Counsellor

Jehannine is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Medical Genetics at UBC, where she holds the Canada Research Chair in Translational Psychiatric Genomics. Her research work involves using a clinical genetics perspective to inform interventions to improve outcomes for people with psychiatric disorders and their family members. She is also a board certified genetic counselor, graduate advisor for the UBC genetic counseling MSc program, and she led the development and implementation of the specialist psychiatric genetic counseling service here in BC.

This talk focusses on what is currently known about genetics and mental illness. Also of interest is the Psychiatric Genetic Counselling Clinic.Genetic counsellors are health care professionals with specialized training and experience in the areas of medical genetics and counselling.

Genetic counsellors can tell you what is currently known about the causes of mental illness, and can help you to apply this information to your own family.
