Today, the BC Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions officially announced that it is providing more than $1 million to help the BC Schizophrenia Society provide supports to help families coping with mental illness.

Last night, Minister Sheila Malcolmson attended BCSS’ “Schizophrenia Revealed: The Untold Stories of Schizophrenia” event and provided opening remarks that expressed the BC Government’s support of BCSS.

“I am honoured to be here with you today for Schizophrenia Awareness Week to recognize the important work done by BCSS every single day and to announce the government’s support for the vital help and resources that the Society provides people of British Columbia. The work that you wholeheartedly take on is a vital part of the government’s vision to build that comprehensive system of mental health and addictions care that works for everyone.”

Minister Malcolmson continued to talk about the importance of family involvement and recognized how families affected by serious mental illness also face chronic stress and require mental health supports.

“I have such deep appreciation for all the families who care so much for their loved ones. You’ve told me that we need a mental health support system that provides support to family members, as well as those experiencing a serious mental illness. Tonight, to expand vital supports for people whose family member is experiencing a serious mental illness, our government is announcing just over $1M for the BCSS. This means that families across BC, including those in rural and remote communities, will have better access to education and supports to help their loved ones get the support and the care they need.”

BCSS is thrilled by this opportunity to continue its work in helping families in rural and underserved communities through direct family support, monthly family support groups, and education programs.

“I am thankful that these programs will now be available to families in all parts of the province. People like me need to know that they aren’t the only one who has a sibling, parent or child living with mental illness. I feel much more able to help my family member after receiving support from the BC Schizophrenia Society—just knowing they are there, listening to us, understanding the challenges we face and advocating for us is a calming relief.”

Michele K., who has a son diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum disorder.

A huge thank you to Minister Malcolmson and the Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions for your ongoing support of families affected by schizophrenia and other serious mental illness.
