West Kootenay Regional Educator
Melissa Michaud as the Nelson Regional Educator. Through this position, she provides direct family support, education and services to families affected by schizophrenia and other severe and persistent mental illness.
With a background in social work and a range of experience in social services and mental health, Melissa joined BCSS in August 2016. Previously, she worked in youth transition houses, women’s shelters, and with the Canadian Mental Health Association as a Peer Support Team Leader.
Melissa has always been passionate about supporting individuals struggling with mental health issues and believes in the value of education and awareness for reducing stigma towards those living with mental illness. She brings this passion to her work as an educator. Melissarecently completed a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Victoria and is excited to incorporate this knowledge into her work with families.
In Nelson and the surrounding communities, Melissa provides information, support and education for families who have a loved one with mental illness. Services she offers include emotional support, education on mental health, resources and help navigating the mental health system. She also connects family members together through the Family Support Groups she currently runs in Nelson and Trail. She is working on expanding the services and programs in the area and plans to offer Strengthening Families Together in Nelson. She also runs a Partnership Program in Castlegar, which provides education about mental illness.

In her spare time, Melissa enjoys hot yoga, watching live music, hanging out with friends, hiking, traveling, and relaxing at home with a movie and her two cats. She has more spare time now that she has completed her Master’s degree!
