SUMMARY:Beyond Impossible: Navigating Stigma Through Stories of Strength
DESCRIPTION:The BC Schizophrenia Society (BCSS) is excited to announce Beyond Impossible: Navigating Stigma Through Stories of Strength—a special event for National Schizophrenia and Psychosis Awareness Day on May 24\, 2025.  \nJoin us at the Cultch Historic Theatre in Vancouver from 1:00 pm to 3:45 pm for an impactful afternoon of storytelling and compassion!   \nBeyond Impossible is designed to take the audience on an emotional journey—from awareness and empathy to connection and hope. The event will begin with a commentary on how we can bridge the gap between families and the resources available in their communities.  \n \nThe program will feature a moving monologue written from the point of view of a mother struggling to find care for her son as he is engulfed by the symptoms of psychosis. The reading will spotlight the emotional turmoil many families endure as they realise that their loved one has no insight into their illness and rejects any kind of support. \nThe event also includes a special recorded performance of “Impossible”\, a song by Jim Cuddy that was created to support this cause.  \nA panel discussion on the power of family in mental health journeys and Q&A session will follow the performances. The discussion will include panellists from a range of lived experiences and perspectives\, including family members and caregivers.  \n\nEvent Details \nWHAT: A Monologue\, Recorded Music Presentation\, and Panel Discussion   \nWHY: To increase awareness and acknowledge National Schizophrenia and Psychosis Awareness Day    \nWHERE: The Cultch Historic Theatre at 1895 Venables St\, Vancouver\, BC  \nWHEN: May 24\, 2025\, from 1:00 – 3:45 pm   \nSCHEDULE:  \n\n12:15 pm: Doors Open; Mingling and Light Refreshments    \n\n\n1:00 pm: Welcome and Opening Remarks  \n\n\n1:15 pm: Video Presentation of “Impossible” by Jim Cuddy  \n\n\n1:20 pm: Feature Presentation – Monologue by Jill Daum  \n\n\n1:50 pm: Panel Discussion \n\n\n2:30 pm: Closing Remarks \n\n\n2:45 pm: Reception and Reflection Activity \n\n\n3:45 pm: Event Ends \n\n\nBeyond Impossible will conclude with a reflection activity to offer audience members the opportunity to decompress and connect with each other. Our goal is for every attendee to leave feeling that they belong\, that they contributed\, and that they are part of something bigger: helping to eradicate the stigma surrounding schizophrenia and psychosis. \nTogether\, we will listen and learn\, offer support for one another\, and advocate for a mental health system that better serves those living with severe and persistent mental illness\, and the families who walk beside them. Together\, we are Stronger than Stigma. \nThis is a free educational event that requires advance attendee registration. For those who are unable to attend in person\, the presentations and panel discussion will be livestreamed via Zoom to our members and stakeholders across the province. The event will also be recorded to later be shared on YouTube.   \n\nHow to Register \nAttending In Person or Joining Virtually?\nPlease select the appropriate RSVP ticket below and click “Going.” \nNote: As we are currently experiencing some technical difficulties with our ticketing software\, please note that there may be some delay in receiving an email confirmation. This does not mean your ticket has not been processed. We thank you for your patience.\n\nThis event is made possible by the support of Otsuka-Lundbeck Alliance.  \n \n\nIf you wish to help BCSS cover the costs of this free event\, please consider a donation.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Surface: A special screening of 'Insanity: The Mental Health Crisis'
DESCRIPTION:BC Schizophrenia Society (BCSS) is excited to announce a special event for National Schizophrenia and Psychosis Awareness Day. \nWe invite you to a screening and panel discussion of ‘Insanity: The Mental Health Crisis’\, an autobiographical documentary about director Wendy Hill-Tout and her family’s experience navigating her brother Bruce’s schizophrenia and his subsequent disappearance 25 years ago. This film details the experience of her own family as well as others as they struggle to navigate Canada’s mental health system. She interviews family members\, activists\, and front-line workers to explore how the justice and healthcare systems could provide additional support for these vulnerable communities.  \nFor a quick preview of the film\, you can watch the trailer here: ‘Insanity Trailer.’ \nClick here to learn more about ‘Insanity: The Mental Health Crisis.’ \n‘Insanity: The Mental Health Crisis’ was screened at select theatres nationwide last year\, and we are very excited to present it on such an important awareness day. The event will open to the public at 12:00 pm as a free educational opportunity that people must register to attend. The opening remarks and screening of the documentary will not be recorded; however\, the panel discussion at the end will be recorded so we can share it with our members and supporters. \nBeyond the Surface 2024 Poster\n
