Last month, Dr. John Gray was invited to presented on behalf of the BC Schizophrenia Society to the Special Committee on Reforming the Police Act. To prepare for this, Dr. Gray and BCSS interviewed Regional Educators and families who had needed to use police to respond to a family member’s mental health distress, through which we learned about their experiences of police and mental health teams.

Sometimes, families and their loved ones who live with mental illness need police support. BCSS is urging the Special Committee on Police Reform to find ways to engage and expand coordinated services, while maintaining mental health legislation that is essential to the wellbeing of some of the most vulnerable individuals in our province.
