On Sunday, May 24, landmarks across the province were illuminated in purple for World Schizophrenia and Psychosis Day to raise awareness and share their support of mental illness.

More than 21 million people around the world have schizophrenia, but misconceptions and misbeliefs about it are common. That’s why it’s so important to bring attention to schizophrenia and psychosis and share the truth about life with serious mental illness.

Each year on May 24, we ask people to wear purple in support of the 1 in 100 Canadians who live with schizophrenia and psychosis and help all of us talk about mental illness without shame or stigma.

Landmarks Lighting Up to #SmashStigma

In Vancouver, several landmarks in the downtown core took part in World Schizophrenia and Psychosis Day: BC PlaceTELUS World of Science, Vancouver City Hall, Canada Place, and the Cambie Bridge were all glowing purple.

In Duncan, the World’s Largest Hockey Stick was also glowing purple thanks to the support of the Cowichan Valley Regional District.

In Victoria, the fountain of the BC Legislature had planned to join us but unfortunately had a technical issue with their lights. Still, we are grateful for their support!

Raising Awareness Every Day

Even though World Schizophrenia and Psychosis Day is over for the year, our mission to raise awareness and smash stigma is a daily effort. We hope that you’ll join us in challenging myths and stereotypes by joining our Bust a Schizophrenia Myth contest before June 30!
