
Are you passionate about supporting families who care for people with a mental illness? Would you like to share your expertise and experience with a non-profit organization? Consider joining the BC Schizophrenia Society (BCSS) Board of Directors.
The BCSS Board is composed of volunteers from across the province who provide governance for the BC Schizophrenia Society as it works to fulfill its mission of supporting families affected by schizophrenia and other serious mental illnesses in British Columbia through education, advocacy, and research.
We are currently looking for individuals who bring enthusiasm and experience in non-profit board governance, legal, finance/fundraising, government relations, or community engagement, and/or who are a family member of a person with a serious mental illness.
Areas of need on our board
BCSS aims to integrate the perspectives of individuals from diverse skillsets, backgrounds, and experiences. This year, we are especially seeking nominations from members with experience in:
- Board governance/legal, especially with non-profits
- Indigenous Peoples
- Family members of persons with a serious mental illness
- Persons with lived experience of a serious mental illness
- Youth
- Community engagement
- Finance/fundraising
What’s involved
Nominees must be able to demonstrate commitment to BCSS’s Mission, Vision, Core Values, and Strategic Priorities, and be available and willing to fulfil board member duties, including attending board meetings, the Annual General Meeting, and other special events. Nominees must be (or willing to become) a BCSS member.
Board members can expect to:
- Attend 10 Board meetings per year, each requiring approximately 2–3 hours including preparation
- Participate in Board development and training opportunities
- Serve on Board committees
- Take part in BCSS special events
- Attend the Annual General Meeting
The term length for the BCSS Board of Directors is two years, from October 2026 to October 2028. If you can commit the time and are interested in helping the BC Schizophrenia Society improve the mental health system for people with severe and persistent mental illnesses and their families:
- Download and complete a nomination application.
- Email the completed nomination application to Andrew Stewart at operations@bcss.org.
- Become a BCSS member, if you aren’t already (membership is free).
Deadline to submit nominations / applications is Friday, July 31, 2026 at 4:00 pm.
The Annual General Meeting will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2026.
