The British Columbia Schizophrenia Society (BCSS) will launch the fifth season of its illuminating podcast series “Look Again: Mental Illness Re-Examined” on October 23rd, 2024.
This season on Look Again, we’re asking, “Who Knew?” and exploring surprising facts about mental illness. From links between schizophrenia and dementia or epilepsy to childhood-onset schizophrenia to the effects of exercise and video games on psychosis, we unravel little-known facts and ideas about schizophrenia and serious mental illness.
This season continues our commitment to deepening public awareness and understanding of serious mental illnesses like schizophrenia through seven episodes that mix expert interviews and personal stories from individuals with lived experience and those who care for them. The trailer can be found here.
Episodes will be released every two weeks on topics like the link between cannabis and psychosis, how gut health can impact mental illness, and why some people don’t respond to traditional treatments. This season will be hosted by Faydra Aldridge and include a variety of guests, such as Dr. Gibson Anugwom, Stephen from Surviving Schizophrenia, and many more.
The first episode will discuss treatment-resistant schizophrenia and include perspectives from Dr. Diane McIntosh (psychiatrist, author, educator, and host of Blindsided podcast) and Dr. Randall White (Medical Director for Vancouver Community Mental Health and Substance Use Services).
One of the primary goals of the podcast is to challenge and reduce the stigma associated with mental illnesses like schizophrenia. Through short and easily digestible episodes, “Look Again” aims to present a more nuanced and empathetic understanding of serious mental illness to counter prevalent misconceptions and stereotypes and fill the gap in mental health discussions.
